The owner of the illegal mine in Dengfeng City failed to report the incident at the Songbiao Colliery when the blast happened at 11pm last Thursday, Xinhua reported.

“We received information about the blast this morning [Friday] from the provincial government," a senior official with the local mine safety administration told Xinhua.

The eight victims died after being sent to a nearby hospital.

“There may be more bodies in the mine," the official said.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
