Industry representatives comprising Newcrest Mining minerals executive general manager Colin Moorhead, Mandalay Resources geologist Dr Thomas Fromhold, Gekko Systems chair Elizabeth Lewis-Gray, Optias chief operating officer Dr Ian Smart, former Sino Gold mine manager Jim A Stewart and Castlemaine Goldfields mining manager Darren Watkins will join five FedUni representatives in the group.
“This prestigious advisory group will provide expert advice on new opportunities in these sectors and on the development of tertiary programs and applied research,” FedUni science and technology faculty executive dean and group member Professor John Yearwood said.
“It is extremely timely that an industry advisory group such as this has come into being.
“Australia’s mining and resources industry is moving from pure extraction to advanced services, requiring optimisation and business analytics.
“So the links between industry and universities have never been more important as we address the new challenges ahead of us.”
The FedUni Industry Advisory Group will provide advice and feedback from an industry perspective on developments within the mining, resources and mining services sectors to inform the continued progress of skills development and courses in mining and minerals, optimisation and mining services.
Victorian Energy and Resources Minister Russell Northe applauded FedUni for establishing the advisory group and said stronger links with industry would be invaluable.
“FedUni plays a crucial role in the Victorian mining sector and this new advisory group will only enhance this role and help the university deliver the best possible outcomes for students and researchers,” he said.
“There are great opportunities for Victoria to grow its mining services sector and this government is working hard to promote the sector and to drive jobs and investment.
“A key initiative of the Victorian government is the upcoming IMARC conference, which will showcase the opportunities in Victoria to the hundreds of the industry’s biggest decision makers from across the globe.”
