The incident occurred after water accumulated in a mined-out area of the Datong Coal Mine Group-owned colliery, according to Chinese media reports.

Rescue efforts yesterday were focused on rescuing the 24 miners trapped underground. No official death count has yet been recorded.

The mine’s annual production capacity is believed to be 900,000 tonnes per annum.
