Dupont Australia developed and implemented the dust management system at Port Waratah Coal Services export terminal.

The system helped reduce dust emissions from the site to some of the lowest levels on record.

Dupont technology centre manager Dr Leong Mar said the dust management system analysed weather and other critical conditions that would normally cause dust emissions.

It then takes dust mitigation actions to limit the emissions.

Fugitive dust emission is one of the more visible and contentious issues for the mining industry, governments and local communities.

Dust is an especially serious issue for shipping terminals located close to industrial and residential areas – just ask the Esperance Port Authority.

Dupont Australia managing director Graeme Longe said the success was due to the company’s multidisciplinary approach.

“It is an approach that we believe can help provide solutions, not only in dust management but to a wide range of social, economic and environmental challenges for the resources sector,” he said.
