The conference will be held at the Lakeview Scanticon Resort and Conference Center and is organised by West Virginia University’s Department of Mining Engineering. Around 250 people attend the conference every year from the USA and eight other countries.

Syd Peng head of the Department of Mining Engineering said the conference would be an opportunity to hear about the latest cutting-edge developments related to ground control. In particular Peng said the conference speakers from nine different countries will address the best ground control practices in longwall mining and room-and-pillar mining, new techniques of mapping roof geology in advance of mining and in-situ stress measurements, and highwall mining.

"The conference emphasizes technology transfer and case studies. It is recognized world wide as the annual forum for ground control technology. Therefore it will be very beneficial not only for mining industry practitioneers but also equipment manufacturers, consultants and researchers," Peng said.

The technical program includes, among others, sessions on

Longwall mining

Roof geology assessment,

Roof bolting

Roof/rib support

Roof support design

Roadway stability

Among the 58 papers are the following:

Longwall mining-induced abutment loads and their impact on coal pillar design and entry roof control, J. Chen and M. Mishra (RAG), E. Zahl (NIOSH), R. Thompson (RAG).

Study on top-coal loss and the optimum drawing interval of longwall top-coal caving face, Q. Fu, Y. Fa, G. Jia and D. Mao, (Beijing Mining Research Institute), C. Zhang and W. Shi (Wang Zhuang coal mine).
