William Cox, 40, sustained burns as a result of the incident and was airlifted from the Greene County site to the Pittsburgh hospital on Thursday, according to local newspaper the Herald Standard.

Cox had been working at Bailey for one year.

Consol spokesperson Joe Cerenzia told the paper the injury was not life-threatening and the company had not yet determined the circumstances of the accident: “He had a hold of something, but we’re not sure what he was holding on to.”

Production was not affected, and no other workers were injured.

The paper reported that although Cox could remember the shock and was conscious while co-workers assisted him in exiting the mine, he claimed not to remember the accident itself.

State and federal authorities, as well as Consol, have commenced an investigation to determine the cause.
