The four-day event - which also included rescue, benchman, pre-shift and first aid - attracted 13 groups for the main event: 10 from its home state and three from two other states. Visiting were Highland Mining and Patriot Coal of Kentucky and Pinnacle Mining of West Virginia.
The mine rescue portion of the contests was held over two days and produced two winners - North River mine's Red Team from Chevron Mining and the Green Team from the state of Alabama. Taking the overall top three spots in the competition were Patriot Coal's Bluegrass team, the state's Green team and Highland Mining's No. 9 group, respectively.
The remainder of the contests took place over the final two days of the competition. The first, benchman (made up of 13 contestants), was led by Jim Steadman of the Blue Creek team from Jim Walter Resources, while second and third places went to Steve Cannon of Chevron's Red Team from the North River operation and Steve Barnes from the JWR Blue Creek group.
Of the nine competing in pre-shift, Wes Lovell of Patriot Coal's Bluegrass team took the golden honor and Highland Mining's No. 9 team member David Dennis was second. Coming in third was Chevron's Jim Sunders from the Red Team at the North River complex.
First aid, with five in contention, was wrapped up mostly by JWR teams - the Blue Creek group taking first and the No. 4 crew taking third. Second place was earned by Patriot Coal's Bluegrass.
Bluegrass came around again to take top prize in the final contest, combination. Second and third went to teams from JWR No. 4 and Highland No. 9, respectively.
Taking home the event's traveling Koenig trophy was the Green Team from the State of Alabama.
The gathering, sponsored in part by the association, wrapped with a luncheon and awards ceremony.
