The LTI frequency rate for 2007-08 was 23.7, in line with the previous year, but still above open cut coal at 8.9.
Serious bodily injuries numbered 18 for 2007-08, down from 27 in the last fiscal year and substantially down from a peak of 43 in 2003-04. Open cut coal numbered six for 2007-08.
There were no fatalities for either open cut or underground coal for the period.
During 2007-08 underground operations produced 60.62 million tonnes from 29 mines and 31 open cut mines produced 115.37Mt.
There were 7030 people employed in underground mines and 7070 in open cut. Saleable output per underground employee was 7100t and 12,600t per open cut employee.
The average mining weekly wage in NSW was $1840, compared to people working in hospitality at the bottom of the ladder who bring in $493 per week.
The majority of New South Wales’ exported coal went to Japan with 61% of the pie, while Taiwan and Korea took just over 13% each. China imported 1.1%.
