Thiess works to close uni gap

MINING services provider Thiess is working to close an academic gap for Indigenous university students by partnering with national non-profit organisation Career Trackers.

Founded in 2009 by Michael Combs, Career Trackers supports Indigenous students through their studies and links them with employers as part of paid, multi-year internships.

In Thiess' case, it takes on interns through its vacation program, with some making it through to full-time employment with Thiess.

That includes mechatronic engineer Alex Dyball and engineering student Harley Luxford.

Dyball said he was grateful for the Career Trackers opportunity and the chance it provided to continue working with Thiess.

"Many of my fellow graduates were distracted from their final studies by their job search so I was very pleased to have the support of Career Trackers and Thiess, including the opportunities Career Trackers provides to give back by mentoring and supporting students," he said.

"I'm currently four months into my first engineer role following the graduate program and I am proud to be working in sustainability where we focus on the global imperative to decarbonise industry."

Dyball said Thiess had a commitment to achieving net-zero by 2050 with interim targets set in its sustainability report.

"My role contributes directly to achieving these targets," he said.

"I've been really well supported at Thiess and given every opportunity to pursue projects and areas of work that I'm interested in."

Luxford said Career Trackers had helped him secure multiple internships at various engineering companies and consultancies, most recently at Thiess.

"Due to my involvement with Career Trackers, I have gained an immense amount of invaluable experience, both in my chosen area of study and my professional portfolio, all prior to graduating," he said.

"I plan to continue to work for Thiess as an undergraduate engineer until finishing my degree and hopefully securing a graduate role within the company."
