Richey will be responsible for the legal affairs of the company and serve as company secretary, also advising the board of directors.
Prior to joining CONSOL Energy, Richey was a shareholder in the Pittsburgh law firm of Buchanan Ingersoll. He held several high-level positions, including in-house ethics counsel and co-chair of the firm's compensation committee.
His legal expertise includes labour and employment law, and legal ethics. Richey is a frequent lecturer on issues pertaining to corporate governance and compliance with US federal Sarbanes-Oxley statutes.

Richey was named one of the Pennsylvania Super Lawyers in 2004 and 2005, an honour only received by the top 5% percent of Pennsylvania lawyers.
