The accident occurred at the licensed Fengjialing Coal Mine in Shuozhou City, in China's northern Shanxi Province, official news agency Xinhua reported.
Twenty-seven miners were working in the shaft when the fire broke out. Twelve of them escaped from the scene and rescuers saved another six, Xinhua said.
The mine produces 90,000 tons per annum.
