The US Mine Safety and Health Administration told ILN the accident took place early on Tuesday morning, about 1.40am local time, at International Coal Group’s Wolf Run Sentinel operation in Barbour County.
The workers’ names have not been released.
“The miners were transported to the hospital for medical attention,” an agency spokesperson said.
“Preliminary information indicates that one miner is in serious, but stable, condition [and] the condition of the other two miners is reported to be not serious.”
Personnel from the local MSHA district responded to the incident immediately. A spokesperson for the mine’s owner, ICG, told the Associated Press that the company was cooperating with regulators.
In May this year an 18-year-old red hat was killed at Sentinel when he was run over by a scoop.
The mine was cited for safety violations by the state in connection with the incident.
