Governor Rod Blagojevich on Wednesday announced the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Air Construction Permit to Christian County Generation.
The permit, the first issued of its kind in the country, allows the power company to build the $US2 billion gasification plant known as the Taylorville Energy Center (TEC).
TEC is a proposed 630-megawatt facility that would be among the world’s most environmentally friendly coal plants, allowing Illinois’ high-sulfur coal to be burnt with reduced emissions.
The plant also has the future potential to reduce emissions through carbon sequestration.
