Trapped Chinese miners found alive

SEVEN miners trapped in a cave-in Saturday at an underground mine in China have been rescued alive.

The workers, who were building a second tunnel at the Aiyou Colliery, were trapped when the first tunnel – their only escapeway – collapsed, according to local news media. Crews, who rescued the seven on Tuesday, said on Sunday evening that ventilation levels were stable and that the outcome looked potentially positive.

Rescue teams used a newly established conveyor belt line to construct a 29m tunnel to the area and pull the workers out, news service Xinhua reported.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. Aiyou is part of the Liaoning-based Fuxin Mining Group.
