Cerrejon cuts contractors

TOP Colombian miner Cerrejon will not renew contracts for 200 coal workers as its operations slow down due to “environmental reasons”.

Bloomberg reported that it would not impact the miner’s 2014 production target.

A joint venture between Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Glencore Xstrata, Cerrejon lifted its thermal coal exports 2% year on year to 33.5 million tonnes in 2013 despite a 32-day strike and some terrorist attacks on the coal rail network.

The Colombian government has stepped up its environmental scrutiny since coal miner Drummond spilled about 200 tonnes of coal into the bay of Santa Marta last month.
