The Nkhachira project lies within the ML143/2005 and EPL174/2005 tenements in northern Malawi.
Total coal resources are reported at 38.4 million tonnes, comprising 10.1Mt measured, 13.8Mt indicated and 14.4Mt inferred-category coal.
These resources take the company’s total JORC resources to 62.3Mt.
IEC has several other coal concessions in Malawi and ongoing exploration will result in further resources acquiring JORC standard over the coming year.
Intra Energy acquired the Nkhachira tenements in March 2013. The mining area covers 11.25sq.km.
Detailed geological mapping was carried out throughout the leased areas, starting from exposed seams in the Malcoal Mine, and following them along strike of the lease.
Outcrop and trench samples were also collected and analysed.
Intra Energy’s executive chairman Graeme Robertson said: “IEC has now defined a sufficient quality of coal resources in Malawi to support its Pamodzi project, and continues into the final stages of negotiation with the government of Malawi”.
IEC is in the prefeasibility stages of developing a minimum 120 megawatt coal-fired power plant in Chipoka, Malawi, due to be completed no later than 2016.
