Financial news provider SNL Energy said closures peaked in 2012 with more than 9000MW retired.
The rate slowed in 2013 with 6300MW shuttered.
The PJM Interconnection saw the most retirements, with roughly 2707MW of coal capacity retired in 2013.
Of the 22,778MW of coal capacity retired from 2009 to 2013, nearly 10,200MW was located in PJM.
US power producers plan to shutter 27,143 MW of coal capacity between 2014 and 2022, according to SNL Energy data.
