The project will look at studies on spontaneous combustion conditions in the coal fields of Northern China, development of new technologies for extinguishing coal fires and prevention of fires and early detection, China Daily said.
The collaboration is an initiative of the National Remote Sensing Centre of China and the German Aerospace Centre.
The project will be mainly implemented in the Wuda, Gulaben and Ruqigou coal fields, where coal fires have been a problem.
The Wuda coal field has 16 fire-prone areas, with a total burning area of more than 300,000 square metres, China Daily said. According to statistics from the Shenhua Group Company, spontaneous combustion in these coal areas has caused a loss of 1.8 million tons of coal resources since 1990.
