Schiele, whose resignation was effective September 11, remains Vigo chairman.
Harman, who had served as the company’s vice president since 2000, has become both president and CEO.
Schiele began his mining career with the mining division of Koester Companies in 1977 and became president of the arm in 1985. In 2000, he was named CEO of Koester, which eventually became known as Vigo Coal.
A West Virginia University and University of Evansville graduate, Harman was a project engineer for Peabody Energy prior to joining Vigo, and also held the seat of director of engineering for Pyro Mining.
Vigo’s holdings in southwest Indiana and southeast Illinois have included the Liberty, Friendsville, Red Brush, Red Brush West, Chili Pepper and Cypress Creek mines.
