The accident on Tuesday left a big crater, with BBC News reporting the explosion had flames rising 50m into the air and was heard up to 1 kilometre away.

The British news service reported that 16 miners had been saved, though five later died in hospital from severe burns.

Sify News last reported Indonesian officials had confirmed 32 as dead with one miner still trapped in a 150m shaft but feared dead.
