The monthly inspections, which began in April 2010 after an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine, involve mines which have poor compliance histories.
Since April 2010, MSHA has conducted 835 impact inspections and issued 13,267 citations, 1,200 orders and 55 safeguards.
MSHA has called on the mining industry to work together to prevent fatalities after eight US miners were killed in accidents during the September quarter – including three at US coal mines.
“We need to work together to prevent additional fatalities,” MSHA said in its quarterly review of mine fatalities.
“Miners do not need to die while working at coal mining operations. These fatalities can be prevented. No miner should die while working.
“Effective safety and health management programs save lives. Workplace examinations can identify and eliminate hazards that kill and injure miners.”
