The consortium is led by Eliphus Monkoe, the former chief operating officer of BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa.

BHP Billiton Energy Coal SA, formerly Ingwe Collieries, announced in November last year that it would sell Optimum Colliery.

BHP Billiton Energy Coal SA said it hoped to reach a formal agreement with the consortium in the second quarter of 2007.

The consortium has indicated it would expand the Optimum mine with extra coal bound for export as well as its existing local customer – Hendrina Power Station.

Optimum Colliery was originally an underground mine but now operates as an opencut operation.
