The blast took place yesterday afternoon at the Xiaowuqie coal mine, a government spokesman told news agency Xinhua.
The blast was caused by an ejection of gas and coal into the mine and it is not known how many people were working in the shaft when the accident took place.
Investigations into the incident continue.
