Joy Mining Machinery and Continental Crushing & Conveying

THE latest longwall automation technology will be on show at the Joy Mining Machinery stand at this year’s Longwall USA show.

The products on display at Joy’s booth will include a simulator program demonstrating the new shearer remote control system and an RS20s roof support control system.

Joy will be launching the new Technical Information Portal Service (TIPS), which is an interactive library of electronic files used to deliver enhanced information services to both customers and Joy personnel. The customer benefits of TIPS will be demonstrated at the booth.

Continental Crushing & Conveying will be presenting a conveyor simulation software program to model system behavior under all loading conditions.

Joy said the new products and others on display could help operations become the safest, most productive mines in the world, while operating at the lowest cost per unit.

Gates Corporation

GATES Corporation is taking on hydraulic hose protection with its new product – the LifeGuard hose sleeving system – to be released at the Longwall USA show.

Intended to protect machine operators from bursts and leaks, the company designed the LifeGuard system with two nylon layers. The inside sleeve layer is made of nylon fiber that elongates up to 20%, absorbing the energy from a burst or leak.

The outer sleeve is abrasion resistant, but not specifically designed for abrasive environments. Worker safety within a 3-foot line-of-sight of a burst or pinhole leak is the primary benefit.

“The sleeve is secured at either end of the hose with special ‘channel’ clamps,” the company said. “The clamps allow leaking fluid to escape, thereby alerting the machine operator that there’s a leak in the hose.”

LifeGuard sleeving protects machine operators from 3000psi pinhole leaks and 6000psi bursts on -4 (1/4in), -6 (3/8in) and -8 (1/2in) hose sizes. The sleeving is compatible with a wide range of fluids, including environmentally friendly liquids and biodiesel fuel, and can withstand temperatures up to 212F (100C), the SAE standard for most industrial hydraulic applications.

Gates Corporation says the LifeGuard sleeving satisfies a variety of industry standards, including ISO 3457 and MSHA’s flame-resistance requirements. It meets the intent of ISO 3457 that requires operator protection within a 3ft line-of-sight of any hose conveying fluid above 725psi at 120F (49C).

Grindex Pumps

DEWATERING pump supplier Grindex will show its recently released new generation of submersible heavy-duty drainage/sludge pumps at this year’s Longwall USA. Officials for the company said the pumps, also available in an MSHA-permissible version, are ideal for mining as well as construction, tunneling and other industrial applications.

The pumps have several special features, such as “smart” motor protection. Grindex said the solid state controller would prevent Grindex pumps from single phasing, overheating and backward rotation.

Grindex also has a patented air valve system that permits its pumps to run completely dry without sustaining damage, and a new design of its hydraulics section featuring a closed impeller that keeps the reduction of performance caused by long-term wear to a minimum.

“This makes the new pumps capable of operation in demanding applications with maintained capacity,” Grindex said.

Another new design is the easy impeller adjustment that permits stable dewatering for the pump’s entire lifespan.

Pump designs range between 1.9hp and 140hp and deliver up to 5000 gallons per minute with capacities of up to 750ft. The MSHA pump designs range between 1.9hp and 27hp and deliver up to 1500 gallons per minute with capacities of up to 240ft.
