Rib support software developed

TECHNICAL seminars are being held in February and March to transfer a new design methodology for ...

Staff Reporter

Researcher Mark Colwell of Colwell Getotechnical Services recently completed ACARP Project C11027 with the goal of developing a rib support design methodology and computer based design tool that can be utilised by colliery engineers and geologists who have sufficient experience in strata mechanics.

That goal has been achieved and the design technique is referred to as ADRS - Analysis and Design of Rib Support. It is believed to be the first time a systematic rib support design technique has been developed for any country's underground coal industry.

This methodology provides a formalised engineering approach to rib support design. ADRS provides a Design Rib Support Rating (RIBSUP) and guidelines in relation to the use of liners and cuttable/steel support. The rib support hardware component of the software assists the strata control engineer with the selection of suitable products and rib support patterns to satisfy the Design RIBSUP.

This seminar is primarily designed for mine site personnel (ie managers, supervisors, engineers and geologists) who are involved in the management and implementation of a colliery’s strata management plan. It is also relevant to mines inspectorate, researchers, consultants and ground support suppliers.

Three industry workshops will be held: Brisbane on February 16, Emerald Queensland February 23 and Penrith, NSW March 2. Please see Events for more details.
