Entitled, Preventative and holistic management of health in a global mining industry, Dr Shanahan’s paper will provide an overview of managing health in mining.
In his current role, Dr Shanahan is responsible for strategy and programs encompassing all aspects of health in relation to BHP Billiton’s global operations. This includes employee health with a focus on exposure management, fitness for work and life, global medical programs and community health involvement. His work scope ranges from corporate offices in capital cities around the world to remote exploration sites and offshore sites.
He holds diplomas in Obstetrics, in Occupational Health and in Aviation Medicine and has worked as a general practitioner, and will refer to a number of case studies related to managing health in a global mining industry.
The lecture series is held with the support of Mitsubishi Development, a major stakeholder in Australian coal mining operations. The company is supporting minerals tertiary education at UNSW through a range of initiatives that include undergraduate scholarships and an annual public lecture on a topical aspect of mining.
The lecture starts at 5.30pm and is being held in the NIDA Theatre, opposite UNSW, 215 Anzac Parade, Kensington.
