Finding traction

POOR traction is a common problem experienced by underground equipment operators using low profil...

To suit low profile solid tyres, and also taking into account tight clearances in many mines, Queensland-based RUD Chains has developed a special chain with compact, low height sidewall sections. The chains are available in both three-link (traction) and four-link (protection/traction) mesh patterns.

Keeping in mind maintenance issues, RUD has ensured the chain has been designed to allow unhindered access to wheel studs and service points. It uses standard 14mm components, and features a forged wear link with special profiling - to ensure maximum traction is achieved.

The chain also features a unique fully forged suspension link, which improves the force distribution within the tyre chain.

"Initially only seen on chains for large surface mining equipment, this new system is now being installed on virtually all chains right through the size range," RUD said. "The forged suspension link is more resistant to severe impacts, and facilitates safer and faster fitting and tensioning adjustment of the tyre chain."

RUD supplies direct to mines, boasting the North Goonyella operation as a long-time client of six years, to OEMs or through distributors such as Setco.
