Brockway is currently chief executive of the CRC for Clean Power from Lignite.
After completing his PhD in chemistry at Monash University, Dr Brockway joined the State Electricity Commission Victoria in 1980 where, over 13 years, he held both research and management positions covering many aspects of the commission's research and development effort, particularly in coal science.
He was appointed SECV's principal materials scientist in 1987 and manager, scientific investigations in 1990, a position he held until his appointment as CEO of the CRC for Clean Power From Lignite in 1993.
A fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Brockway is also managing director of Generation Technology Research Ltd.
"David's research interests have varied over the last two decades or so and have included electrochemistry and many aspects of coal science including drying, dewatering, combustion and gasification," CSIRO chief executive Dr Geoff Garrett said.
"He is looking forward to working with the division's staff and stakeholders as he believes the research being undertaken is both nationally and internationally essential.
"With the launch just last week of CSIRO's new energy transformed national research flagship, and our new $36 million energy centre in Newcastle, David's appointment also coincides nicely with major opportunities for the division to grow substantially in the future."
Garret said the division's acting chief, Dr Jim Smitham, would continue in that role until Brockway takes up his appointment on January 19. MiningNews.net
