West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater said the worker, whose name has not been released, was hit in the back with a cable at Newtown Energy’s Eagle mine near Winifrede.

Winifrede is on the Kanawha-Boone County line.

The miner’s current condition is unknown, though the agency confirmed the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Federal officials did not respond to an ILN request for information on the miner, the cause of the incident or the operation’s current operating status before press time.
