Premier Anna Bligh officially opened BHP’s new Waterfront Place office lat week in Brisbane.
“The shift is a welcome recognition of how BHP Billiton views Queensland and where we stand in its future,” she said.
“I extend a warm welcome to staff who’ve relocated to Queensland and hope you enjoy living in Brisbane as much as I do.”
In February a BHP spokesperson countered a Bloomberg report that the company was going to cut Melbourne office staff numbers to 350 at the end of June, compared to 600 at year-end 2007.
At the time the spokesperson said the reduced numbers at the Melbourne office were part of a planned relocation program going back 18 months.
“The absolute majority – by a longshot – are relocations,” she told ILN.
BHP employees started shifting over from Melbourne to Brisbane last year.
