The hoist, which failed when it didn't unload at the surface and then fell on September 16, had forced operations to be idled at the Virginia operation until December 13 when production got back underway.

About 200 mine employees were laid off while the repair work was conducted.

The Buchanan Mine produces about 400,000 tonnes per month of low- volatile, metallurgical-grade coal that is sold to domestic and international steelmakers.
