MSHA has scheduled an applicant screening at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky on April 28-29 in an effort to find these individuals.
“We’re looking for qualified people who can help us continue to make safety the number one priority for the mining industry,” said MSHA acting administrator David Dye.
“This agency needs individuals who want to dedicate themselves to our mission and help us eliminate hazards that threaten working miners.”
Pre-registration is encouraged and guarantees a seat for the testing; it can be completed online at www.doors.dol.gov before April 5 using announcement number MSHA-06-132-KY. Those who cannot pre-register will be accepted as “walk-in” candidates but will be given a testing seat based on space availability.
The agency requires a resume and photo identification of all applicants and recommends checking its website, www.msha.gov, to verify the status of the testing prior to any travel.
MSHA also said those tested will receive their results and all selected candidates will be given two years of a formal training program for the positions, which are at a GS-9 level paying about $US42,000 to start. Additional information on the effort and the program, the agency said, may be found at www.msha.gov/Inspectors/InspectorInternProgram.asp.
