Online news agency ANI reported residents as saying gases were escaping from surface cracks ever since the explosion last Wednesday.

The mine’s owner, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), said there was no danger from the methane leak, according to the report.

“About 500 metres away from the spot, methane gas was emanating from some cracks since yesterday, and it has been burning. This is nothing dangerous,” the company said.

BCCL, based in Dhanbad, produces almost half of India’s steelmaking coal.
