The Mackay briefing is one of three gatherings throughout Queensland through the month.

On October 10, Kagara Zinc operations manager Graeme Collins will speak in Townsville on the Kagara operations at Mt Garnet, Surveyor, Balcooma and Dry River South and expansions that will include underground mining and a treatment plant at Chillagoe.

On October 11 in Mackay, MESCA will present a “double header” with Steve Levien, strategic sourcing manager with Mackay Supply Services, BHP Billiton; and Craig Williams, project procurement – capital manager at Rio Tinto Procurement.

Levien will present on the challenges BHP Billiton faces in the current environment and the impact that places on its operations and projects. Furthermore, he will present the challenges the company faces in balancing between sustainable local sourcing and sourcing from a global marketplace.

Williams will present on the challenges Rio Tinto faces in the current environment and the impact that places on its operations and projects. Furthermore, Rio Tinto Coal Australia will provide an update on the upcoming Kestrel Coal expansion project.

In Gladstone on October 12, Central Queensland Ports Authority port infrastructure planning manager Gary Carter will speak about the proposed development of the Wiggins Island Coal Terminal. The port will have an initial capacity of 25 million tonnes per annum, with the capability to upgrade it to 70Mtpa in later stages.

Terminal development would include a stockyard with staking and reclaiming conveyors, outloading conveyors and three shiploaders. Capital costs for Stage 1 will be in the order of $A450 million and for the total project (70Mtpa) approximately $1.85 billion.

MESCA is a business development association, part of the Australian Industry Group. It boasts more than 300 members – Australian suppliers to the mining and mineral processing industries.

In 2005 more than 2000 delegates from all sectors of this industry attended 24 briefings in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

The briefings are open to all suppliers.
