Twentymile achieved a safety record of 1.26 for 2013 with more than 1 million hours worked during the year and is being honoured for a second consecutive year.

Employees at Twentymile helped drive the best safety results in Peabody’s 131-year history.

Twentymile has received the president’s award for safety four times in the last 10 years and holds the record for winning the award among Peabody’s underground mines.

Peabody Energy – Americas president Kemal Williamson said previous recognition came for the best underground safety performance in 2005, 2010 and 2012.

“Twentymile shows an excellent example of a long-term commitment to excellence in safety,” he said.

“To achieve results of this calibre two years in a row, our employees must focus on safety each and every day.

“I am very proud of their achievement and commitment to safety.”

Strong communication, looking out for one another and innovative ideas were hallmarks of the safety culture at Twentymile, operations general manager Pat Sollars said.

He credited the Colorado team’s success to strong safety values and commitment.

“Safety is more than a priority at Twentymile, it is a value,” he said.

“Our workforce is continuously evaluating and implementing innovative solutions to improve safety systems.

“For Twentymile employees, safety is not a statistic – it is a way of life.”
