Walter Industries and partner Kodiak Mining plan to extract about 700,000 tons of thermal coal from the mine next year, Associated Press reported.

Walter, which also operates three underground coal mines in Tuscaloosa County, will implement room and pillar mining at the operation, which has not seen any mining for at least six years.

The mine off Shelby County Highway 10 is 800 feet deep.
