Led by the nation's biggest union - the National Union of Mineworkers - miners from the gold, platinum and coal mines will walk off the job on Tuesday.

The union said the strike comes after ongoing demands for a review into the country's safety standards at mines that it said is creating a genocide in the mining industry.

NUM said the strike will be the first ever industry-wide to affect the South African mining industry.
