The WVCA said Friday that Bush had been confirmed to make an appearance on Thursday, the first day of the association’s gathering, at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. On his agenda will be overall energy policies as well as the importance of clean coal and nuclear technologies.
“Since he was first elected in 2000, the president has shown a strong and sincere commitment to the future of coal,” association president Bill Raney said.
“He believes in West Virginia coal. He believes in the West Virginia coal miner.”
Raney added that while Bush’s term is almost up – the nation will select a new chief of staff in November – he realises the urgency of current energy issues in the US.
“Our country can’t wait for solutions,” he said.
“The president isn’t waiting. He is working hard to free us from our dangerous dependence on foreign oil.”
The WVCA’s annual event will run through August 3.
Scheduled speakers include: West Virginia University interim president Peter Magrath; American Electric Power president Michael Morris; and state Department of Environmental Protection cabinet secretary Randy Huffman.
Jim Boyd of consultant John T Boyd in Pennsylvania will also take the stage to discuss coal markets, while National Mining Association senior vice-president Hal Quinn will present national coal issues, and author Homer Hickam will present on his new book, Red Helmet.
