According to the Associated Press, the cars tipped over, spilling coal and causing track damage. The incident also forced the closure of several railroad crossings.
CSX spokesperson Gary Sease told various media outlets that the accident occurred at about 1.58pm local time.
He said the train contained two locomotives and 100 total cars, each with a coal hauling capacity of 100 tons.
As of Wednesday afternoon, he added, company crews were on the scene to recover the spilled coal.
The derailed cars, however, were "stacked like an accordion" and probably caused "fairly significant damage" to the freight-exclusive tracks.
The names of the origin mine and destination customer were not made available.
