Another step to national safety laws

THE Safe Work Australia bill has passed through Parliament, marking another step towards a nation...

Under the legislation, Safe Work Australia will be set up as an independent statutory agency to work on the draft model of the new national OHS laws.

The current myriad of OHS laws comes from six state, two territory and two federal legislative frameworks, presenting difficulties to businesses which operate over multiple jurisdictions.

The Minerals Council of Australia said the multi-layered regulatory regime imposed a significant administrative burden on the mining sector and added unnecessary complexity to business operations.

Next month Safe Work Australia will release the draft model and invite public comment for six weeks.
