Benson has supported the development of the Minerva pulverised coal injection coal mine in Central Queensland for the past 18 months.
He has also provided support in the development of the mine extension at the Sojitz mine.
The nomination for the award, a category in the Australia's Mining Monthly Awards in association with Komatsu, came from Minerva's Simon Budden.
The Mining Consultant of the Year category is sponsored by Transmin
One of his reasons for the nomination was Benson's ability to work with large and small clients.
"I know Adriaan has worked on the due diligence of the Yancoal acquisition of the Rio Tinto assets in the Hunter Valley," Budden said
"During this time he also assisted Minerva in a number of small mine planning projects. He conducted himself with the same level of diligence and thoroughness regardless of the size of the client."
Budden said Benson also took the time to mentor young mining professionals.
"While Adriaan had been tasked to come to site to complete a project, he readily connects and takes an active interest in the professional success of the technical team here at Minerva, he said.
