The categories are Operational Excellence; Discovery of the Year; Emerging Leader of the Year; Innovation Award; Consultant of the Year; and Contractor of the Year.

The Operational Excellence Award recognises outstanding performance or improvement over the qualifying period of November 1 2015 to October 31 2016. The performance or improvement can be the result of long-term strategy pay-off or immediate returns from policies or operational changes.

This award covers both operating performance and safety. It will be presented to a site and operating company – or companies.

The Discovery of the Year Award will recognise a high value greenfields or brownfields mineral discovery made during the qualifying period as well as the application of science, technology, methodology, new theory, thinking or models that contributed to the find.

It will be presented to an owner, representative, team or owner-service provider team whose work on the project led to the discovery or advanced the knowledge of a region laying the groundwork for future finds.

The Emerging Leader recognises those leaders aged 18-29 who have demonstrated leadership qualities, have demonstrated support and fostering of other young leaders and have demonstrated improved outcomes for the area they work in. This award recognises the future of the mining industry.

The Innovation Award recognises collaborative innovation involving a mine owner, project developer or contractors and suppliers that directly results in a standout commercial outcome or outcomes. Ideally this outcome is repeatable and scalable across an organisation or, indeed a sector.

Contractor of the Year is for the drilling, mining or construction contractors that secure the highest number of new contracts during the qualifying period. They will be assessed by the judging panel against their immediate peers, comparing the cumulative Australian dollar value of new business secured and its impact on the overall growth and development of the company.

The Consultant of the Year Award is for the geological, mining and/or metallurgical consulting firm that secures the highest number of assignments during the qualifying period. 

Judges will assess nominees against their immediate peers and, where possible, compare the cumulative Australian dollar value of business secured and its impact on the growth and development of the firm.

The judging panel will be drawn from industry leaders and will be announced in the not too distant future.

Applications need to address the appropriate award criteria and submissions need be no more than 1000 words.

Winners will be announced in the February edition of Australia’s Mining Monthly magazine.
