ILN spoke with the US Mine Safety and Health Administration as well as state officials from Kentucky and West Virginia Monday but no operations had submitted any issues following the 4.3 magnitude earthquake centered near Hazard and Whitesville.
The US Geological Survey confirmed the quake, which lasted for about 15 seconds, occurred about 0.7 miles underground – which is shallow in terms of earthquake depths but not much deeper than most of the region’s deep mines.
Residents in nearby Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Ohio and Georgia also reported feeling the temblor that occurred around noon.
An aftershock tremor measuring 2.5 magnitude followed about 90 minutes later near Hazard.
USGS geophysicist John Bellini said it was considered "light" but the agency did note earthquakes in the coal mining area were rare.
