Local newspaper the Decatur Herald-Review and the Associated Press say those impacted by the furlough, which will take place within the next 60 days, are production and support/management positions. The majority will be from the production staff.
Cat confirmed last month that 460 jobs would be cut from the same plant, which makes engine liners and blocks as well as other mining equipment.
The impetus for that cut was a slump in mining equipment demand.
That brings total layoffs at the facility to 760. Before the reductions, it employed about 4000 workers.
The OEM also said April 29 it would close its facility in Summerville, South Carolina, next year.
The shuttering of the remanufacturing plant for transmission and component rebuilds for the aftermarket circle will put 280 people out of work.
Caterpillar spokeswoman Barbara Cox told the paper the furloughs would bring production in line with demand.
“Products built in Decatur are used in the mining industry, which has witnessed weaker market conditions when compared to last year,” she said.
“While some cost reduction measures such as temporary layoffs, shutdowns and shortened workweeks have already been implemented, further measures must be taken in the near-term.”
