According to regional news outlet the Coal Valley News, 27-year-old military veteran Zarcus Lee Gore was found at the Hobet Mining surface complex near Madison on Saturday morning by a turkey hunter.
Officials believe Gore, who was on home confinement stemming from a sexual assault charge, died of an overdose.
Gore had also been previously charged with felonies for malicious wounding and forcible compulsion, and had faced his victim in court two days before his body was discovered.
It is not known if items stolen from his location of home confinement, including a semi-automatic pistol, a scanner and cash, were with the body, the paper said.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Department is heading an investigation.
US Mine Safety and Health Administration officials did not immediately respond to a request Tuesday for more information on Hobet’s operating status amid the probe.
