Receiving first place, or the 27th Governor’s Cup honor, was Consol’s Buchanan Black team from Mavisdale, Virginia, followed by SunCoke Energy’s Jewell Smokeless Black team from the Virginia town of Vansant.
Third place went to the Gray Team of Teco Coal from Corbin, Kentucky.
Organizers, including the Virginia Mining Association, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy and the US Mine Safety and Health Administration, confirmed 17 teams attended from those three operators as well as Cumberland Resources, Cumberland River Coal, Dickenson-Russell Coal, Knox Creek Coal Corporation, Lone Mountain Processing, Maxxim Shared Services, Wellmore Coal and the Virginia Small Operator Mine Rescue.
“The value of the service provided by these mine rescue teams to their fellow miners cannot be overstated,” DMME deputy director Butch Lambert said.
“It is our pleasure to recognize their efforts through this annual competition.”
