Steady February for Queensland

Opencut mines produced 11.04Mt during the month, up more than half a million tonnes on February 2005.

Coal exports totalled 10.3Mt for the month with coking coal making up 7.46Mt and thermal coal the rest.

Almost 4Mt were shipped through Dalrymple Bay, followed by Gladstone, which exported 3.3Mt, and Hay Point with 2.1Mt.

Employment numbers continued to climb with 18,067 employed during the month compared with 14,753 the previous February.

Significant events during the month of February for the state included the construction launch of a $A270 million project to draw water from Burdekin Falls Dam and transport it 220km to Moranbah; and the Queensland Government announced it would spend $A28 million on electricity infrastructure to reinforce electricity supply to the southern Bowen Basin mining area as well as support Queensland Rail's electrified coal network system.
