Operated by ANR subsidiary Brooks Run South Mining, 36 miners have consequently lost their jobs according to the Register-Herald.
“It is considered to be permanently idled,” ANR media relations director Steve Hawkins told the newspaper.
“They have been producing more coal than could be sold for some time. There is just an oversupply of the metallurgical coal that Cucumber produced. And the world coal for met price has dropped significantly in the last year.”
Hawkins commended the past performance of the operation.
“They had operated for more than seven years without any loss accidents,” he reportedly said.
“Cucumber was a leader for Brooks Run South in terms of safety. It is difficult when companies are forced to make a choice like this. It affects hard working folks.”
