The new office space will consolidate the staff of about 100 from the operator's Charleston and Chapmanville branches, and it is estimated the workers could begin work there by the US summer of 2008, Massey spokesman Jeff Gillenwater told International Longwall News Monday.
Construction has already begun on the three-story structure, located on Wash Branch Road just off US Route 119 in the fast-growing business area of Charleston known as Corridor G. The other offices were leased, Gillenwater said, and will be vacated with the move.
"[It] will be closer to the company's operations in southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky," said Massey officials in a statement, adding that no lay-offs will be required in the transition.
"We are pleased to expand our investment in Central Appalachia with construction of this new office building," added company president Don Blankenship.
"The new facility's central location will better support Massey's projected growth and symbolises our commitment to the region."
In August, Massey said it would expand its presence in Appalachia with an acquisition of assets from Peachtree Ridge Mining and Belle Coal, including a deep mine permit for a future West Virginia operation, in a $US2.75 million deal.
