THE long lag for development of coal mineworker’s pneumoconiosis or “black lung” disease means a reduction in dust exposure at coal mines may not show as a reduction in the disease for some years, according to Safe Work Australia report Occupational lung diseases in Australia 2006-2019.
The Queensland mining industry now has 39 CWP cases diagnosed since 1984.
The report states there is often a long latent period between exposure and diagnosis of CWP, so those hospitalisations and deaths are likely to have been associated with higher coal mine dust exposures...
